The Ming Dynasty brought about many changes in China. One of the the changes was the ability of the people to trade with the world and have self discovery. European influences were all around and the Ming people were able to show their wares. Individuality amongst some came to the forefront. Expansion and restoration became prevalent. Besides wearing pendants and amulets around the waist, belt buckles and ornaments became popular. As always, the upper class and Royalty led the way. Becoming popular were elaborate belt plaques. This Ming Plaque has a central design of a dragon. The dragon is known as a legendary creature and a symbol of power, strength and good luck. The background of scrolling clouds amongst trees and vines. This plaque is carved with sharp intricate details with a soft polish and patina. Approximately 2 7/8" wide X 2 1/4" high x 3/8" thick.
