A Limoges Grisaille Enamel Plate in the late 16th century style after Jean III Penicaud, French, 19th Century. Painted in grey and white heightened with body color and gilding, the central basin depicting Neptune riding a conch-shell chariot pulled by four seahorses, the rim with alternate S-scrolls and urns, the underside similarly enamelled with an urn against an undecorated ground - 8 3/8in. (21.3cm.) diam. The scene depicted illustrates a mythological event described in the Aeneid (book 1, verses 124-141). It is copied from the back panel of a casket attributed to Jean III Penicaud now in the collection of the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore Cf. Philipped Verdier, The Walters Art Gallery: Catalogue of the Painted Enamels of the Renaissance, 1967, pp. 121-123, illus. Fig 59
