Enamel Opera Glasses - Binoculars - Mucha - Lemaire

These Enameled Opera Glasses - Binoculars were custom designed by the Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist, Alphonse Mucha. Known for being the first major artist in the Art Nouveau movement, this one-of-a-kind piece is a true work of art. By the 1900s, opera glasses rose to popularity and were a must-have fashion accessory for affluent theater-lovers. A great deal of care and precision has gone into these intricately decorated and carefully encrusted glasses. Due to the delicateness of the enamel, each color was kiln-fired at a different temperature. The nature of this intricate process plays an important role in the long-lasting vibrancy of this incredibly rare piece clad with beautiful women. Alphonse Mucha opera glasses primarily refer to an extraordinarily rare, master-tier artifact of Belle Époque luxury: a set of custom-designed, enameled Art Nouveau opera glasses created by the legendary Czech artist Alphonse Mucha.
Crafted in collaboration with the renowned French optics manufacturer Lemaire Paris, these glasses are considered a pinnacle intersection of high fashion, utility, and fine art from the turn of the 20th century.

The Design and Artistry
The barrels and matching extendable lorgnette handle feature custom, hand-painted enamelwork showcasing Mucha's signature aesthetic:
  • The Imagery: Beautifully rendered Art Nouveau women framed by organic, flowing lines, stylized floral motifs, and soft Byzantine color palettes.
  • The Hardware: Gilt-brass construction with finely detailed floral chasing that matches the whimsical, naturalistic contours of the enamel.
  • The Rarity: Unlike mass-produced mother-of-pearl or standard leather opera glasses of the era, enameled pairs personally designed by Mucha are museum-grade treasures.
