The Ming Dynasty provided some of the rarest and finest examples of Chinese art. Craftsmanship in porcelain and carvings became refined and desired by the elite. One of the great forms of carving during this time period is the Citron, or hand of Buddha. Although examples are know and presently still copied, it is rare to find one with realistic details and execution. The Jade stone was expensive and larger pieces were commissioned by the wealthy and rulers. The general public could not afford the stone or even the Expertise of a skilled carver. As in modern times, generally you get what you pay for. A true citron resembles a Buddha’s lotus shaped fingers. This example is the a perfect example of what a citron represents.
